States that require drivers to buy liability insurance
Not all but most States has made it compulsory for any drivers to buy liability insurance. Drivers can buy the financial liability insurance at the time of registering their vehicle or after an accident. This is very important safeguard for the civilians. This ensures that the drivers can pay the third party if accident occurs. In short if you want to drive a car or any other types of vehicle, most States require that you must have a liability insurance or deposit either in bond or in cash some amount with the State treasury. The exact amount of deposit varies from State to State. But there are very few drivers that opt for this option. Since, the amount of deposit in place of liability insurance is very high (up to $50,000) and they don’t have that much money lying idle.
The liability insurance comes in to force at the time of accident. The damage done by the liability insurance policy holder is paid by the insurance company within the limit decided by the particular policy.
The damage includes car repair, property damages, medical and other costs. Every year each State renews their minimum requirements of liability insurance. Forty eight States along with the District of Columbia has passed the resolution and made it mandatory to have liability insurance for all drivers. The New Hampshire and Wisconsin are the only States that has no law regarding the mandatory liability insurance for drivers.
Despite the law, many drivers avoid buying liability insurance. There are many reasons for this, but main reason is due to high premiums for drivers with bad driving records. Bad driving record may come from the violation of simple traffic rules. Such drivers could not afford to have the liability insurance. Other reason is the enforcement of this law is not that efficient.
Many States has started maintaining the detail records of drivers and their liability insurance. This will quickly identify the uninsured drivers.
The minimum limit of liability insurance also varies from State to State. According to the latest development Utah State has passed the resolution to increase the limit of minimum liability insurance to 25/65/15 from previous 25/50/15. This law will enforce from the 1st January 2009.
Similarly Alabama has also increased the minimum limit for the liability insurance to 25/50/25 from 20/40/10.
