I just moved here recently from Denver, CO but travel to Atlanta all the time for business.
I've been surprised by the cost of housing and the taxes. This fee that gets tossed at you for your car each year is insane. The T is more expensive than I had anticipated but it's a great option. I can't afford to go to a Sox or Pats game. I've been surprised to find that food isn't as expensive as I'd though…I'm not buy $4 a gallon milk though…we don't have those fees up north of town.
Boston has amazing history and I'm constantly reminded of what a cool place this is. it's got a lot more age to it than Atlanta. Not everyone rushes out of the city after working hrs like in ATL, but if you drive you still sit. The T is great b/c it's easy and seldom has delays (compared to other public transport).
I'd be surprised if you made any more $$ here than in Atlanta. It gets costly but I'd much prefer living here than Atlanta. I do miss Denver at times though b/c it was so much cheaper and offered amazing outdoor choices in the hills…and gosh, the weather! Hands down Denver has nicer weather.
bottle line – move back to Boston and see how it goes. You can always decide to move back. You can do a year or two anywhere…that way you know at the end of the day where you're really meant to be. Heck, you only get one go round…too short to wonder…just give it a go and see what happens.
I think the weird thing that happened was that they somehow doubled your insurance premium for that first year. The $1200.00 premium sounds more in line with what it should be for a year. You had better call them and make them tell you on the phone what happened. Tell them you cannot get there by yourself. If you have to go to see them, take a trusted friend or relative with you.
No fault takes the responsibility for your own actions away. If I do not have to pay for the damage that my negligence causes to others, I have very little incentive to avoid that damage.
You can see that in the way people drive in Mass. It is one of the more aggressive driving areas of the country. People have less fear of accidents, especially those driving older cars.
There is no real competition for insurance in Mass. If you purchase a vehicle out of state, in a state that allows dealers to issue temporary registration plates, you can not get the current Mass insurance companies to cover you until you have registered the car in Mass. In most states, you just call your agent and have the vehicle added to the policy.
I don't know about the law in MA, but basically if you're in a fault state, meaning you can be held responsible for an accident and taken to court, its possible that if the amount they're asking isn't covered by the insurance they can sue and if you can't pay – they can come after your assets.
I live in FL, and when I bought my 2nd home my rates went down, not up. I'd ask for a second opinion from another company. Try calling around to different insurance companies customer service, they may be able give you more info and be unbiased.
I have a 2006 Ford Taurus. My wife and I have never been in an accident or gotten a speeding ticket. Does is matter which auto insurance we use or does the state determine the cost calculations?
